Self Luminous Exit Signs do not require an external power source or battery backup. They use a mechanism similar to Fluorescent lighting, but powered by Tritium instead of an electrical current, and are available in models that are rated to last up to 20 years. The half-life of tritium is 12.5 years. The Tritium is hermetically sealed in a glass tube, and poses little risk of radiation exposure. (One manufacturer claims that if a person were enclosed in a 10' X 10' room and all the tubes on the sign were to break, they would be exposed to an amount of radiation similar to that used in a dental x-ray.)

Under normal use, no radioactive particles can be released from a Self-luminous Sign made to BS-5499 part 2 which is a basic requirement stipulated by the FSD for Self-luminous Signs to be used as Exit and Directional signs in Hong Kong. Besides, Self-luminous Signs that are manufactured in Canada are under the stringent control of a Specific Licence issued by the Atomic Energy Control Board to insure that they will stand up to extremely tough handling.

The beta-particles of tritium cannot penetrate thin layers of any solid substance, such as a piece of paper, the human skin, or the glass-wall of the GTLS. When Radon Gas (Rn222) decays, the Radiation Energy of the alpha-particles is 5.5 MeV, while its Progency Po218 and Pb214 emit alpha particles with energy of 6 MeV, and 7.7 MeV. It can penetrate the body and is responsible for some of the lung cancer disease. The average person's annual exposure to Radon Gas Radiation is about 1.0 mSv.

The beta-energy from the decay of tritium is not strong enough to penetrate the skin, and a breath of tritium gas will be exhaled and not going to make anyone ill. As tritium is lighter than air, it will rise to the ceiling in seconds before anyone has a chance to take a deep breath of it. Actual Case Studies sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy of personnel exposed to tritium from broken Self-luminous Signs indicated that the typical personnel doses ranged from 0.047-0.077 mSv. This is no higher than any passenger getting of a long-haul flight exposed to Cosmic Rays for several hours. Bear in mind that the average annual dose from background radiation (both natural and man-made sources) of an average person on earth is about 3 mSv.

NO
