China: The Best New Place to Buy a (Pretty Cheap) Watch
For the past few weeks I've been wearing a watch that has received more compliments at parties than the Rolex I'm usually reaching for (Nota mía, tomaaa!!!!). And people are stunned when I tell them who makes it and where it's from.
"China? Is that what you said?," they'll ask, hardly looking away from my wrist.
Of course, not all beautiful watches come out of Switzerland, or even Italy or Germany. More and more, we're seeing them out of China — once a watch underdog, the country has risen to prominence in the timepiece market. Sure, they've been eclipsed by Switzerland and Japan for ages. And, initially, Chinese watches were so poor in quality that competing companies would laugh at them (literally). But over time, a few brands have begun making covetable watches. All while doing this far more affordably than the competitors.
Take Parnis, for example. That company makes gorgeous, well-made watches, most of which clock in under $100 — and are all available online. Haven't heard of them? You're not alone. But know this: Parnis has also been (secretly) producing the watches of some of your favorite luxury manufactures for years (Nota mía, alaaa, toma columpiada....), and the quality of these watches far exceeds the price. For instance, you can buy a watch with a "gooseneck" movement — which allows you to adjust the length of the movement winder and timing of the watch, generally something seen only on high-end timepieces — and save tens-of-thousands. My own Parnis has lasted two years and still keeps time as well as an IWC.
There's also Getat Watch, a Chinese web store run by a watchmaker that specializes in custom watches and parts inspired by Italian and German military timepieces. Quite often, it's the place you'd send your watch to get it "blacked out," like rappers often mention, but Getat can also make you a "Frankenstein" watch: You choose your favorite parts and the company cobbles it together into one timepiece. Since you're ordering from China, though, keep in mind that your new watch, customized or not, will take about a month to arrive.
It's worth noting that neither of these companies are particularly innovative — the movements (and sometimes, the design) are nearly replicas of the watches that inspired them. And that's why many on watch forums scoff at these companies, putting these "homage watches," as they're known in certain circles, on the same level as the fakes that are rampant throughout countries like Thailand. To combat legal issues, Parnis and Getat will often change the look of some parts, as to avoid a battle over a competitor's patent. But that doesn't make these watches any less beautiful. Especially if you need something that won't get stolen at the gym, and is only $100 to replace if it does.
