Every year, watch enthusiasts around the world wait impatiently for the pre-Christmas online auction from IWC Schaffhausen. Not for nothing. Every year since 1998, the old, established company has donated an exquisite collector’s item for the benefit of a nonprofit organization. On this occasion, between 14 and 21 December 2005, it was the turn of a historic Big Pilot’s Watch, of which IWC made only 1,000 in 1940, to come under the virtual gavel on the IWC Web site. This is not only the largest, but also one of the most coveted collector’s watches from the firm of IWC. IWC entered one of its large-format models in the race with a minimum bid of 25,000 US dollars, the highest ever in the history of the traditional IWC auctions.
The first bid was received on the very first day, just 50 minutes after the auction opened. Bidders from Switzerland, the USA, Netherlands, Philippines and Italy were responsible for some exciting bidding, especially as the auction drew to a close. The final bid of more than 42’900 US dollars made a bidder from the USA the lucky owner of the sought-after Big Pilot’s Watch.
IWC is very pleased by the outcome of the auction. This is the eighth time the Schaffhausen watch manufactory will donate the proceeds to a charitable institution such as the International Red Cross, Unicef, Amnesty International, terre des homes and The Cousteau Society. This year’s auction will benefit the Laureus Foundation, which helps socially disadvantaged children through sports activities and currently has around 40 projects worldwide.
